CBD oil

New year, new you! Is now the time to try CBD oil?

It seems like you can’t listen to a podcast or go to your vet’s office these days without hearing about products containing cannabidiol, also known as CBD. CBD is pervasive, and it comes in so many different forms – tinctures, lotions, salves, drinks, chewable gummies, the list goes on.

Even though CBD oil is all the rage, many people still don’t know what it is. Is it marijuana? Does it actually work? Is it safe? The short answers are – no, yes, and yes. But let’s dive deeper into these topics! Here we’ll cover some of the most common questions surrounding CBD so that you can decide for yourself if it can make you happier and healthier in 2021.

Is CBD marijuana?

As we said earlier, the short answer is no – CBD is not marijuana. While marijuana is a plant, also known as cannabis, CBD is a compound found in that plant. CBD is one of the several chemical compounds in a class called cannabinoids. Manufacturers extract CBD from the cannabis plant and dilute it in oil to produce a CBD oil product.

What’s another well-known compound derived from cannabis plants? You guessed it! Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. The cannabinoid THC is the active compound that produces the ‘high-effect’ many users experience with marijuana. Why CBD products may contain trace amounts of THC, it’s not enough to have a psychoactive effect. While CBD does not produce euphoria, it can make individuals feel more mellow, less anxious, or it may help them experience less pain, for example.

Does CBD work?

While clinical studies are still in the early stages, there is evidence that CBD works. Scientists tell us more research is surfacing that demonstrates CBD’s potential therapeutic effects. Some of the most prevalent conditions treated with CBD include sleep issues, anxiety, and pain. What are patients and scientists saying?

  1. Treating sleep issues – One recent study looked at the effects of CBD and insomnia, for example. The Current Psychiatry Reports study showed that medium and high doses of CBD could have a sedating effect. The results mean that CBD oil may help people suffering from insomnia or individuals who have trouble falling asleep.
  1. Reducing chronic pain – One study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that cannabinoids can suppress inflammatory and neuropathic pain. The naturally-occurring compound does this by targeting our body’s glycine receptors.
  1. Improving mood and treating anxiety – While there is a lot of anecdotal evidence supporting the belief that CBD can reduce stress, there’s also a 2019 clinical study showing the benefits. The study, which took place in Japan, looked at the effects of CBD when taken by teenagers suffering from social anxiety disorder (SAD). The group found that CBD reverses anxiety-like behavior.

Is CBD safe?

While CBD is not currently FDA approved, most doctors and scientists believe that CBD is very safe for adults. It’s essential to check with your doctor first to see how it might interact with any medications you’re taking, however. It’s also critical to purchase CBD oil from trusted, reputable sources. Look for CBD products with COAs (Certificate of Analysis) on their website or the product itself. This certification says the company or manufacturer used third-party laboratory testing results. This certification also means that the CBD product is of the correct potency; it contains the right amount of cannabinoids (as listed on the label) and does not contain any contaminants, such as mold or traces of metals.
